Soft magnetic materials have applications in electromagnetic devices like electric motors, sensors, actuators, generators.

When produced by powder metallurgical (PM) technology, soft magnetic parts have advantages in three-dimensional (3D) isotropic magnetic behaviour, production flexibility of material’s design and environment friendly process.

There are mainly two kinds of soft magnetic materials; sintered soft magnetic materials and soft magnetic composites (SMC). Sintered soft magnetic materials are produced by uniaxial pressing and sintering of alloyed powder at elevated temperature. Depending on the application, there are material choices, pure iron (Fe), iron phosphorus (FeP), iron nickel (FeNi), iron silicon (FeSi), iron cobalt (FeCo) and ferritic stainless steels. SMC is made of insulated iron powder, which realizes very low iron loss at medium and high frequencies.

Sintered soft magnetic materials
  • High permeability
  • Low coercivity
  • DC and low frequency applications (< ca.50 Hz)
  • High flux density
  • High mechanical strength
SMC
  • Low iron loss at high frequency
  • High flux density
